How does vaccination provide protection?

Vaccination is the safest method to build immunity against a pathogen your body hasn’t yet met. It uses a harmless version of the bacteria or virus that causes the disease, allowing your immune system to recognise it without causing illness. This triggers a specific immune response to combat it. The immune system then retains a memory of the pathogen, so if a vaccinated person is exposed later, their immune system is ready to fight it off.

Hi, I'm Aisha, 9 years old in Plymouth. I had the MMR jab to protect against measles and stuff as I had missed having it when I was younger. I was a bit nervous at first, but the nurse helped me relax and even gave me a stress ball. It was over in a flash, like a tiny pinch, and then I got a lolly. Now I feel like a superhero 'cause I'm safe from those nasty bugs. If you're getting it, don't worry – it's easy!
